Its about 1:30am and as some of you are aware, insomnia has taken over so I thought I'd browse through the blog and low and behold I have found that my prayers were answered.HR3548 has been passed by the senate and is enroute back to the house. I think I can FINALLY get some rest now. Hopefully Illinois is up and ready to dispurse some much needed assistance (home of DURBIN) and I can actually keep a roof over my families head this winter. Good night and god bless you all.
I heard the great news but I'm a little concerned. According to an article I read a few minutes ago:
Who will qualify for extended benefits? Extension comes with a deadline: Under the Senate plan approved Wednesday, a person would have to exhaust regular unemployment benefits (14 to 26 weeks in Michigan, or up to seven weeks for workers in their own family businesses) and the previous emergency extension authorized by Congress (up to 33 weeks) by the end of December to be eligible for the extension.
That means anyone whose regular benefits or previously authorized Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) is to be exhausted in 2010 wouldn't qualify for the extra weeks -- at least not under the bill the Senate passed. Congress might extend that window with another bill.
If I'm reading it right, that kind of sucks because NO ONE would be able to use 14 weeks by the end of the year unless they only qualified for 16 weeks initially and thereby would be entitled to 8 weeks. Am I reading and interpreting this correctly?
I just read HR 3548 and it extends from Dec 2009 to 2010. I read this just now to answer someones question, because I believed that to, but I double checked since they ran out in January.
Thanks for the info CCS714. I thought that it didn't really make sense but I figured they knew more than we did if they actually printed the article:)
Question: Is it true that people who have recently lost their jobs would not be entitled to ALL of the extensions? I mean that I thought they were for people that have been unemployed since like '06.
Those extensions are tied to ARRA of 2009 the so called stimulus bill passed in 02/09. The application(apply) to those expire in 12/09 and can't collect funds after 03/2010 and HR 3404 is to extend those for all that haven't collected them until 2010.
BTW..I don't trust the media on articles..it just makes me investigate, as most people here do, just as I called the Majority Leader of The House on the calendering of HR 3548. JerzeeGirl already had the info though. She is good for info.
please help everyone...i became unemployed on 02-01-08 and received my last unemployement check on 08-30-09 from the fed-ed extention i got 79 weeks will i qualify for this extention..thanks in advance for you help:)
Yes you will qualify. I also became unemployed in February of '08 and I qualify. Only question is for how many weeks based on your state's unemployment rate. Best bet is to call and ask though. Florida is ready and as soon as its signed they are ready to implement. They even have a message on their unemployment phone # telling people about it since we have over 1 million unemployed as of last count.
Yankees :)

to apply by 12/2010. That bill is in Committee in the House and is almost sure not to pass until next year.
