McDermott just said they still have to address this again before the end of the year. Remember it was McDermott was the one that put together this Emergency bill to put a band-aid on the issue until they could deal with HR3404, which is still a live bill yet to be heard.
I just received an email from Judy Conti of NELP in response to a concern of when a check will be recieved from this new extension.
She first repsponded that each state is different and asked me what state I live in. Then, she checked with 4 NJ commissioner and replied back that I can expect my first check on December 1, 2009. BTW - I live in New Jersey for those of you who also live in New Jersey.
Good luck to all!! Now, maybe we can discuss ideas for job creation and push for that as heavily as we have for this extension. We will need to do something before this runs out, as is, I don't see any abundance of job openings within these few months....any ideas??? Thanks to everyone for putting in the footwork to help get this bill passed. God Bless you all.
Thank you Barbara. i know there are a few people from NJ that will be interested in hearing this. I am going to check with NY to see what they are saying.
Has anyone heard about the "sunset provisions" attached to this bill?? I just read an article at www.economy.freedomblogging.com that has a headline titled "Few eligible for the full 20-week jobless extension." Please check out that article/link!
Barbara, you are right, this is far from the end. It is just a band-aid on a much larger wound. We will all need to continue our efforts to keep this issue alive and in the front of everyones' thinking. We need jobs, we need good jobs to replace the jobs we have lost and the jobs that are still being outsourced to other countries. These jobs need to be brought back to this country and the law giving them the ability to outsource rescinded.
This blog was formed as a place to work with the issues, not just the one we are dealing with this minute but the on going issues.
I would encourage everyone to continue to post and comment here to share news and ideas. Perhaps we need to see how to change the name to deal with the larger problem, but that is for another day!
Darrell, this bill was an emergency bill meant to help those who would run out or have run out on or before the end of this year. I have posted a number of times today that there is still a larger bill to deal with the overall issues such as the sunset provisions. The bill that will deal with the bigger picture is HR3404. The speakers today in the House have addressed this issue a number of times this morning as well.
@Alley: I was laid off on 7/21/2009 and currently on my initial ui 26 weeks in Ca. which expires in Jan 2010. Are you saying that hr3404 will dictate whether or not I receive my extensions going forward in Jan 2010? Thanks in advance.
Yes, this bill was only to address the issue of benefits that have or will end on or before Dec 31, 2009. These people have exhausted all possible benefits.
HR3404 is a much more comprehensive bill meant to address the larger issues of the unemployment and loss of jobs. It is meant to be brought to the Floors in both the House and the Senate before the end of the year. Will it be, that I cant say as we have seen how long it took to get this emergency issue addressed, but all Congress is aware of it, they each have their own versions of the bill and they all know this is also something that needs to be passed to help the economy as well as the American people.
As far as the POTUS signing the bill, it has NOT yet been voted on. The vote we heard was the motion to suspend the rules so they could bring it to the floor today for a vote. It will be voted on before the end of business today.
Did she mention of the "December 1" check will be for a standard 2 weeks, or if it will be bigger because it will cover most of November? Seeing as, if Obama signs it today or tomorrow, by the time Dec 1 rolls around WAY more than the standard 2 weeks have passed.
Do you actually see, I know that was the actual intention, December 31, 2009 on the HR 3548. I have had problems finding any dates except the FUTA surtax, Alley.
Carl, I totally agree with you on the delay to pass HR3404 before the end of the year. We have heard so many of the Senators talking about how people had not yet run out of benefits when we all sat here without money for months or weeks. I would expect the larger bill will take time as well and will follow a similar path.
HOWEVER, This bill they are passing today should take care of everyone who actually runs out of benefits no matter how many weeks they have been able to claim. I guess this is a good question for NELP. It seems that no matter how many weeks you were entitled to up to this point, 26, or 54 or 79, this bill should help anyone who is running out of benefits on or before the end of the year. BUT, my thinking is that it will also help those who run out before they pass the larger bill.
Carl, I think the comment I just posted addresses this issue. I do think that in reading this bill you need to go back and refer to the bill that it is actually part of..you know what I mean..as you read this bill it says "this line is to replace that line and this line is in addition to that line and so on..." I really think that this bill will cover people in general who are running out of benefits no matter what tiers they have already received. Certainly it is something to really look into.
I have posted the link to the actual bill so that everyone can get to it with ease and read it. I have read through it and to me it seems that no matter when you run out of benefits, as long as you have claimed at least one (1) week of emergency benefits this will extend your benefits. Again, this is at first reading the entire bill as it was passed yesterday and today. If anyone else sees anything different please comment.
I was out sweeping..it passed. What was the vote. Obama should sign it today. Politicians like to pass things they want to hide on Friday nights, because of no real news coverage. I would think he would want to sign this today.
Ms. Conti did not mention whether or not we will receive the three weeks of pay from November. I will send her an email and see if she responds, ok? I would imagine that the we are eligible from the time the president signs and makes it law. However, if we don't receive a letter for a few weeks it may be that we are only eligible from the time of the notice and/or when we claim our benefits. All of my extensions in the past went through automatically and I never had a gap. This is a big gap from July to now...and I am wondering if they are going to tell us to fill out something and send it back as part of procedure. I am thinking that I should try to claim on Tuesday of next week to, more or less, activate it. I used to call in and claim on Tuesday's and receive the direct deposit on Thursday's of that same week. I was told the days for call in's were based on letter of last name. Anyway, I will send an email now and get back to you when I receive a response. Take care!
Is there a website or online resource similar to this one (hr3548) where we can support bill hr3404 and follow the progress? Thank you for sharing your knowledge...
